ホワイト式車輪配置
ホワイト式車輪配置（ホワイトしきしゃじくはいち、Whyte notation: 直訳すると「ホワイト記法」ないし、ホワイト氏式記法）は車軸配置の記法の方式の一種である（「ミカド式車輪配置」などのような、「ホワイト式車輪配置」という車軸配置があるわけではない）。フレデリック・メスヴァン・ホワイトが考案し[2]、1900年12月に「American Engineer and Railroad Journal」で発表された。ホワイト式は先輪、駆動輪、従輪の数を、ダッシュ（-）で繋いで表現する[3]。1本の車軸には2本の車輪が付いているため、数字は偶数になる。ただしモノレール式機関車の場合には奇数になる。
表記法

[編集]先輪、駆動輪、従輪だけで構成されている単純な機関車の場合、それぞれの車輪の数をハイフンで繋ぐ。例えば「<oOOOOo」（左が先頭方向、Oが駆動輪、oが補助輪とする）のような構造の場合、「2-8-2」となる。
なお、米国などでは従台車やテンダー台車にブースターとして引き出し時のみ使う小型の動力装置をつけるものがあったが、これは常時使用するわけではないので動輪にカウントしない。
極めてまれなケースだが、後述の関節式以外の蒸気機関車で「動輪同士の間に非動力の車輪がある」場合は「2-6-（2）-0」のような動輪の後にカッコ表記が用いられる[4]。
関節式機関車
[編集]関節式機関車には途中に関節部分があり、その関節の前後にそれぞれ駆動輪がある。この場合、間に「+」を入れて表記する。例えばガーラット式機関車の一つ「double Pacific」の車軸は「<ooOOOo oOOOoo」のようになっているので「4-6-2+2-6-4」という表現となる。
マレー式機関車のように2つの走行装置の間に補助輪が無い場合には、そのまま「-」で繋ぐ。例えばユニオン・パシフィック鉄道4000形蒸気機関車の車軸は「<ooOOOO OOOOoo」のようになっているので「4-8-8-4」となる。
末尾記号
[編集]末尾記号Tは、タンク機関車、あるいは炭水車（tender）付きを意味する。イギリスではTがサイドタンク、PTがパニアタンク、STがサドルタンク、WTがウェルタンクを意味する。T+Tがタンク機関車にさらに炭水車を付けることを意味することもある。
ヨーロッパでは、Rが「無し」を意味する。0-6-0RTと0-6-0TRは同じ意味で「炭水車無し」である。ただし、フランスではTRが「乗務員室2箇所」を意味することもある。
特殊な蒸気機関車ではVBは垂直ボイラー式蒸気機関車（例えば0-6-0 VB）、Fは無火機関車、CAは圧縮空気式機関車を意味する。
内燃機関車においては、燃料と駆動方式によって表され、Dがディーゼル機関車をPがガソリン機関車を表し、後にMが付けば機械式、Eが付けば電気式、Hが付けば液体式である。
電気機関車では架線集電にOE、バッテリーロコにBEが充てられる。
その他にもRが軌道車、RTがラック式鉄道用機関車、Gがギアードロコを表す。
内燃機関機関車
[編集]イギリスでは、小型のディーゼル機関車やガソリン機関車も、蒸気機関車と同じ方法で表示する。普通従輪が無いので、0-4-0, 0-6-0, 0-8-0のようになる。車軸がチェーンやシャフトで結合されている場合、あるいは全輪駆動の場合、4w, 6w, 8wのように表す。例えば4wPEは、四輪駆動ガソリンエンジン電気式トランスミッションである。大型ディーゼル機関車にはUIC式分類を用いる。
通称との関係
[編集]アメリカ合衆国では、良く使われる車軸配置には通称が付いている。その通称は、多くの場合、その型を最初に採用した機関車の名前である。例えば2-2-0の通称はPlanetである。
