テイオフィタリア Theiophytaliaは、1878年にコロラドの白亜紀前期の地層から頭骨が発見されていた鳥脚類で、長い間カンプトサウルスに含められていたが2006年にケネス・カーペンター (古生物学者)らによって新属新種として再記載された植物食性恐竜の一つ[1]。
発見と記載

ホロタイプにして知られている唯一の標本、YPM 1887は断片的な頭骨で、オスニエル・チャールズ・マーシュによって1886年にカンプトサウルス・アンプルス Camptosaurus amplus として記載された。ギルモアはこの頭骨を用いてモリソン層のカンプトサウルスの頭骨を復元した[2]。しかし神々の庭にある中生代の地層の薄層の微視的な比較では、その地層は実際はパーガトイア層に属することがわかり、従ってこの頭骨は白亜紀前期のものであると発覚した。
ブリルとカーペンターによる2006年の研究では、頭骨はカンプトサウルスのものではないとされた。カンプトサウルスと比較し、より長く、重く、鼻先の皺が多く、下顎骨の後ろ側が広く、前眼窩窓が小さく、方形骨と下顎骨の関節丘がより堅固であると指摘された。 そのため独自の属と種を設けられた[1]。
テイオフィタリアは系統的にカンプトサウルスとイグアノドンの中間に位置付けられた。模式種は Theiophytalia kerri[1]。2010年と2011年にマクドナルドと学生たちが行った分岐分析では、テイオフィタリアはスティラコステルナの基盤的位置づけで、ヒッポドラコに近縁であるとされた[3][4]。

名前の由来
[編集]属名は古代ギリシア語の θειος, theios（神の）+ φυταλία, phytalia（庭） の組み合わせで｢神の庭｣を意味する。これはコロラドスプリングスのガーデンオブザゴッズに因んでいる。種小名 kerri は1878年に標本を発見したジェームズ・ハッチソン・カー James Hutchinson Kerr への献名なのだ[1]。
