Phenakistiscope (oft misritað sem phenakistoscope) var fyrsta tækið til að kalla fram hreyfimyndir sem náði útbreiðslu. Slíkar myndasýningar eru taldar eitt af fyrstu formum hreyfimynda og undanfari kvikmynda. Þessi tæki sýndu hreyfimyndir sem endurtóku sig aftur og aftur í endalausri lykkju. Diskur snerist á handfangi og áhorfandinn horfði gegnum gægjugat og sá teikningar á disknum hreyfast þegar honum var snúið í hringi. Phenakistiscope var ein fyrsta tilraun til að skapa hreyfingu með því að nota sjónbrellur.

Orðið phenakistiscope var notað í grein í franska fréttablaðinu Le Figaro í júní 1833 og er runnið úr grísku orðunum phenakisticos „að blekkja“ og óps „auga, andlit“.
