Walter Veltroni OMRI ( ; lahir 3 Juli 1955) adalah seorang penulis, jurnalis, dan politisi Italia, yang menjabat sebagai pemimpin pertama Partai Demokrat dalam oposisi tengah-kiri, hingga pengunduran dirinya pada 17 Februari 2009.[1] Dia menjabat sebagai Wali kota Roma dari Juni 2001 hingga Februari 2008.
Biografi
[sunting | sunting sumber]Veltroni lahir di Roma. Ayahnya, Vittorio Veltroni, seorang manajer RAI terkemuka pada tahun 1950-an, meninggal hanya satu tahun kemudian.[2] Ibunya, Ivanka Kotnik, adalah putri dari Ciril Kotnik, seorang diplomat Slovenia di Tahta Suci yang membantu banyak orang Yahudi dan anti-fasis untuk menghindari penganiayaan Nazi setelah 1943[3]
Penghargaan
[sunting | sunting sumber]Pada tahun 2003, ia menerima gelar honoris causa dalam Layanan Publik oleh John Cabot University of Rome. Pada 2006, Veltroni menerima gelar Cavaliere di Gran Croce (Ksatria Salib Besar) dari Presiden Republik Italia Carlo Azeglio Ciampi . Ia memenangkan Penghargaan Amerika dari Yayasan Italia-AS pada tahun 2009[4]
