Virus influenza B adalah satu-satunya spesies virus dengan genus Betainfluenzavirus pada famili Orthomyxoviridae. Secara morfologi, virus ini memiliki kemiripan dengan virus influenza A karena keduanya sama-sama mengalami mutasi melalui lompatan antigenik dan pilahan ulang (reassortment).[1][2][3]
Virus influenza B tercatat hanya menginfeksi jenis mamalia tertentu, di antaranya manusia, musang, babi, dan anjing laut.[4][5] Variasi inang yang terbatas ini diduga menjadi penyebab dari rendahnya jumlah pandemi influenza yang berkaitan dengan virus influenza B. Meskipun demikian, virus influenza B diketahui tetap dapat mengakibatkan peningkatan morbiditas dan mortalitas di seluruh dunia. Secara umum, virus ini berdampak secara signifikan pada anak-anak dan remaja.[6]
