Serotipe
Serotipe atau serovar adalah variasi yang berbeda dalam satu spesies bakteri atau virus atau di antara sel-sel kekebalan tubuh pada individu yang berbeda. Mikroorganisme, virus, atau sel tersebut dikelompokkan berdasarkan antigen pada permukaan selnya, yang memungkinkan klasifikasi epidemiologis organisme ke tingkat subspesies.[1][2][3] Sekelompok serovar dengan antigen yang serupa disebut serogrup atau serokompleks.
Pengelompokan serotipe (bahasa Inggris: serotyping) sering memainkan peran penting dalam menentukan spesies dan subspesies. Genus bakteri Salmonella, misalnya, telah diidentifikasi memiliki lebih dari 2.600 serotipe, termasuk Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. enterica serovar Typhi, dan S. enterica serovar Dublin.[2] Vibrio cholerae, spesies bakteri yang menyebabkan kolera, memiliki lebih dari 200 serotipe berdasarkan antigen selnya. Hanya dua dari ratusan serovar tersebut telah diamati menghasilkan enterotoksin kuat yang menghasilkan kolera: O1 dan O139.
Serotipe ditemukan oleh ahli mikrobiologi Amerika Serikat Rebecca Lancefield pada tahun 1933.[4]
