Sel punca embrionik
Sel punca embrionik adalah sel punca pluripoten yang berasal dari massa sel dalam blastosis (embrio dalam tahap awal).[1] Embrio manusia mencapai tahap blastosis 4-5 hari setelah pembuahan, dan pada saat itu terdiri dari 50-150 sel. Saat mengisolasi embrioblas atau massa sel dalam, embrio manusia yang telah dibuahi akan hancur, sehingga menimbulkan permasalahan etis. Isu yang muncul adalah mengenai apakah embrio manusia pada saat itu memiliki status moral sebagai manusia.[2][3]
Sel punca embrionik manusia berukuran kira-kira 14μm sementara sel punca tikus berukuran 8μm.[4]
