Rumpun bahasa Zaza–Gorani adalah cabang dari rumpun bahasa Iran Barat Laut. Meskipun dituturkan oleh sebagian masyarakat Kurdi sebagai bahasa ibu, tetapi kelompok tersebut secara linguistik dikategorikan sebagai bahasa non-Kurdi.[4][5][6] Penuturnya tetap menganggap bahasa ini sebagai "dialek Kurdi".[7][8][9][10]

Zaza–Gorani terdiri dari bahasa Zaza, Gorani, dan Shabaki.[11][12] Bahasa Gorani terbagi menjadi dialek Hawrami, Bajelani, dan Sarli.[13][14]
