Messier 72 (dikenal juga sebagai M72 atau NGC 6981) adalah sebuah gugus bola di rasi bintang Akuarius. Objek ini ditemukan oleh astronom Prancis Pierre Méchain pada 29 Agustus 1780. Charles Messier kemudian mencari objek tersebut pada tanggal 4 Oktober, dan menyertakannya di dalam katalognya.[4] Keduanya mengkategorikan objek tersebut sebagai nebula redup ketimbang gugus. Dengan peralatan yang lebih besar, astronom Inggris John Herschel menyebutnya sebagai "sekelompok bintang dengan bentuk yang bulat". Astronom Amerika Harlow Shapley menyebutnya sebagai kembaran Messier 4 dan Messier 12.[8]
Messiere 72 terletak pada jarak 54.57 + 1.17 ribu tahun cahaya dari matahari.[3] Diperkirakan Messier 72 memiliki massa gabungan setara dengan 168.000[5] kali massa matahari dan memiliki usia sekitar 9,5 miliar tahun. Daerah pusat merupakan daerah yang padat bintang dengan radiasi 2,26 kali luminositas matahari per kubik parsec.[6] Telah teridentifikasi ada 43 bintang variabel yang terdapat dalam gugus tersebut.[3]
