Ichthyosaurus pernah menjadi fosil lengkap pertama yang ditemukan pada awal abad ke-19 oleh Mary Anning di Inggris.[6] Nama Ichthyosaurus pertama kali digunakan oleh Charles König pada tahun 1818, namun tidak digunakan dalam deskripsi ilmiah formal, dengan Ichthyosauria yang dijelaskan paling awal Proteosaurus oleh James Everard Home pada tahun 1819 untuk kerangka yang sekarang dikaitkan ke Temnodontosaurus platyodon. Henry De la Beche dan William Conybeare pada tahun 1821 menganggap Ichthyosaurus memiliki prioritas taksonomis melebihi Proteosaurus dan menamai spesiesnya I.communis berdasarkan satu spesimen yang sekarang sudah hilang. Selama abad ke-19, hampir semua Ichthyosauria fosil dikaitkan ke Ichthyosaurus, menyebabkan genusnya jadi mengandung 50 spesies sampai tahun 1900. Spesies-spesies ini kemudian dipindahkan ke genera terpisah atau dsinonimkan dengan spesies lain.[7]
I. anningae, dideskripsikan pada tahun 2015 dari fosil yang ditemukan di awal 1980an di Dorset, Inggris, dinamai berdasarkan Anning.[7][8][9] Fosilnya diperoleh Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery, dimana awalnya dimisidentifikasi sebagai gipsum. Pada tahun 2008, Dean Lomax, dari University of Manchester, mengenalnya sebagai fosil asli dan bekerja dengan Judy Massare, dari State University of New York, untuk menetapkannya sebagai spesies baru.[8]
