Henri-Frédéric Amiel

Henri Frédéric Amiel (27 September 1821 – 11 Mei 1881) adalah seorang filsuf, penyair dan kritikus dari Swiss.

Dilahirkan di Jenewa pada 1821, ia adalah keturunan keluarga Huguenot yang mengungsi ke Swiss karena Edict of Nantes.

Kehilangan orangtuanya pada usia muda, Amiel berkelana dan bertemu dengan pemimpin-pemimpin intelektual di Eropa, mempelajari filosofi Jerman di Berlin. Pada 1849 ia ditunjuk sebagai profesor estetik di Academy of Jenewa, dan pada 1854 menjadi profesor filosofi moral. Jabatan-jabatan ini, didukung oleh democratic party, membuatnya kehilangan dukungan dari aristocratic party, yang merupakan sebagian besar dari kultur kota itu.

Isolasi ini mengilhami satu bukunya yang paling terkenal, The Journal Intime, diterbitkan setelah kematiannya dan meraih reputasi di Eropa. Buku ini diterjemahkan ke bahasa Inggris oleh Mary A. Ward.

Walaupun ia tidak terlalu produktif, Amiel memiliki pikiran yang kuat, dan bukunya Journal meraih simpati setelah kematiannya Selain Journal, ia juga menulis beberapa jilid puisi dan menulis mengenai Erasmus, Madame de Stael dan penulis lainnya. Ia meninggal di Jenewa pada bulan Maret 1881.

Amiel dimakamkan di pemakaman Clarens di kanton Vaud.
