Fragmentasi (persenjataan)

Granat Mk 2 milik Amerika Serikat, dari era-Perang Dunia Kedua, dengan bentuk beralur di bagian luarnya. Alur yang menutupi bagian luar granat digunakan untuk membantu mencengkeram granat saat melempar. Kesalahpahaman umum adalah anggapan fragmen granat berada di sepanjang alur itu, padahal bukan.

Fragmentasi adalah suatu proses pada saat selubung proyektil dari bom, bom barel, ranjau darat, IED, artileri, mortir, meriam tank, atau shell meriam otomatis, roket, rudal, granat, dan lainnya dihancurkan oleh detonasi pengisi bahan peledak.

Potongan-potongan selubung (casing) ini sering disebut sebagai "shrapnel" (pecahan peluru) oleh sumber media non-militer.[1][2]
