Douglas L. Coleman

Douglas L. Coleman (6 Oktober 1931 – 16 April 2014) adalah seorang ilmuwan dan profesor di Laboratorium The Jackson, di Bar Harbor, Maine. Karyanya memprediksi bahwa gen obesitas mengodekan hormon leptin,[1] kemudian ditemukan bersama pada tahun 1994 oleh Jeffrey Friedman, Rudolph Leibel, dan kelompok penelitiannya di Universitas Rockefeller.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Penelitian ini memiliki peran besar dalam pemahaman kita mengenai mekanisme pengaturan berat badan dan menyebabkan manusia obesitas.[9]

Coleman lahir di Stratford, Ontario. Ia memperoleh gelar sarjana sainsnya dari Universitas McMaster pada tahun 1954 dan gelar PhD pada Biokimia dari Universitas Wisconsin pada tahun 1958. Ia terpilih sebagai anggota Akademi Sains Nasional Amerika Serikat pada tahub 1998. Ia memenangkan Penghargaan Shaw pada 2009,[10] Penghargaan Albert Lasker untuk Penelitian Kedokteran Dasar pada 2010, Penghargaan Batas Pengetahuan Yayasan BBVA 2012 dalam kategori Biomedis, dan Penghargaan Internasional Raja Faisal untuk Kedokteran[11] bersama dengan Jeffrey M. Friedman[9] atas penemuan leptin.
