An illuminated initial from an early 14th century manuscript copy of Friar William of Rubruck's Itinerarium. The upper portion shows William of Rubruck and his travelling companion with Louis IX of France. The friars are either receiving a commission from the French king (Jackson & Morgan 1990, Frontispiece) or presenting their report (Beazley 1903, p. xviii). The lower portion shows the two friars on their journey. |
