Származástörténet
Deutsch: Wellheim, das 1121 erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird, war als Eichstätter Lehen 1251 im Besitz der Grafen von Hirschberg. Nach ihrem Aussterben fiel Ort und Burg 1309 an die Grafen von Oettingen, die Wellheim 1360 an die Herren von Heideck verkauften. Bereits damals wurde der Ort als Markt bezeichnet.1449 mussten die Heidecker nach einer Fehde Wellheim als Kriegsbeute Bischof Johann von Eichstätt, Herzog Otto von Bayern und Markgraf Albrecht Achilles von Brandenburg -Ansbach übergeben. Der letztere erwarb 1453 auch die Anteile der anderen und belehnte Graf Hilpolt von Seckendorf mit Wellheim. Dieser verkaufte Wellheim 1458 an die Grafen von Helfenstein, die es bis 1627 besaßen. Die Tingierung Silber und Rot im Gemeindewappen könnte in Anlehnung an das Wappen der Helfenstein, das in Rot einen silbernen Elefanten zeigte, entstanden sein. Die Herkunft des Pferdes im Wappen ist ungeklärt.
