योकाई
योकाई ( 妖怪 , "अजीब प्रेत") जापानी लोककथाओं में अलौकिक संस्थाओं और आत्माओं का एक वर्ग है। योकाई शब्द कांजी से "आकर्षक; आपदा" और "प्रेत, रहस्य; संदिग्ध" के लिए बना है। अक्सर इस तरह अनुवाद किए जाने के बावजूद, योकाई शब्द के पश्चिमी अर्थों में सचमुच राक्षस नहीं हैं, बल्कि इसके बजाय आत्माएं और संस्थाएं हैं। उनका व्यवहार द्वेषपूर्ण या शरारती से लेकर मनुष्यों के हितैषी तक हो सकता है।
योकाई में अक्सर जानवरों की विशेषताएं होती हैं (जैसे कप्पा, एक कछुए के समान दिखने के रूप में चित्रित किया गया है, और टेंगू, आमतौर पर पंखों के साथ चित्रित किया गया है), लेकिन दिखने में ह्यूमनॉइड भी दिखाई दे सकता है, जैसे कि कुचिसेक-ओना। कुछ योकाई निर्जीव वस्तुओं (जैसे सुकुमोगामी) से मिलते जुलते हैं, जबकि अन्य का कोई स्पष्ट आकार नहीं है। युकाई को आम तौर पर आध्यात्मिक या अलौकिक क्षमताओं के रूप में वर्णित किया जाता है, आकार बदलने के साथ उनके साथ जुड़े सबसे आम लक्षण होते हैं। योकाई कि आकार बदलने को बेकमोनो (化け物) या ओबेक (お化け) के रूप में जाना जाता है।
जापानी लोककथाकार और इतिहासकार योकाई को "अपने मुखबिरों के लिए अलौकिक या गैर-जवाबदेह घटना" के रूप में समझाते हैं। ईदो काल में, कई कलाकारों, जैसे तोरियामा सेकिएन, ने लोक कथाओं से या विशुद्ध रूप से अपनी कल्पना से प्रेरणा लेकर नई योकाई का आविष्कार किया। आज, कई ऐसे योकाई (जैसे अमीकिरी) को अधिक पारंपरिक लोककथाओं में उत्पन्न होने की गलती है।
