‏Two-spirit הייתה תופעה נפוצה בקרב שבטים אינדיאניים בצפון אמריקה. two-spirit לרוב היה גבר הלוקח על עצמו תפקיד מגדרי וחברתי של אישה ואף היה מקובל על קהילתו ככזה. ברוב השבטים, ה-two-spirit היו מקובלים בקהילה, ואף היו מקיימים מערכת יחסים רגשית ומינית עם בני זוג מאותו מין, שהם, לרוב, אינם two-spirit. ה-two-spirit עצמם נתפסו כבני זוג טובים, משום שנתפסו כעולים על הנשים בביצוע המלאכות הנשיות, חזקים וחסונים יותר, וכן משקיעים ומשתדלים כדי ששאר הקהילה תקבל את מעמדם. בעקבות זאת היו מקבלים תשלום גבוה יותר על שירותיהם ולכן אף צוברים ניסיון בפיננסים. כל אלו שדרגו את מעמדם כבני זוג, וסייעו לבניית מערכת יחסים ונישואין, כאשר הילדים במסגרת הזוגית, מאומצים. אימוץ, בתרבויות האינדיאניות, נחשב למנהג נפוץ ומקובל. מעדויות על חיי האינדיאנים, עולה כי בשיאה התופעה הקיפה מעל ל-150 שבטים, אך עם התמעטותם, קטנו שיעורי התופעה בהתאם.
