באחד הימים קראה אמו של אוסטין ויגין בכף ידו וחזתה שלוש נבואות לגבי עתידו: הוא יתחתן עם אישה ג'ינג'ית, ייוולדו לו שני בנים שאותם היא לא תזכה לראות, ובנותיו יקימו להקה מצליחה. לאחר ששתי הנבואות הראשונות התגשמו, החליט ויגין לפעול להגשמת השלישית. באמצע שנות השישים הוא הפסיק את לימודי בנותיו, קנה להן כלי נגינה ורשם אותן לשיעורי נגינה וזמרה. על אף שהבנות לא הפגינו כישרון מוזיקלי כלשהו, הוא שלח אותן להופיע כלהקה הנושאת את השם השאגס (The Shaggs), ובשנת 1969 החליט שהגיע הזמן להקליט להן אלבום. התוצאה לא הייתה קלה לשמיעה - השירים סבלו מקצב בלתי-אחיד ומחוסר-הרמוניה. 900 מתוך אלף העותקים המקוריים נעלמו באופן מסתורי והשאר חולקו לתחנות רדיו אזוריות שלא גילו בהם עניין. למרבה הפלא, האלבום הודפס מחדש בשנות השמונים, זכה להצלחה והפך לאלבום קאלט ולסמל אוונגרדי, עד כדי כך שפרנק זאפה דירג את התקליט כשלישי האהוב עליו בכל הזמנים.
