רובה בסגנון AR-15
רובה בסגנון AR-15 הוא כל רובה חצי-אוטומטי קל משקל המבוסס על או דומה לעיצוב Colt AR-15. ה-ArmaLite AR-15 המקורי, קודמו, היה נגזרת מוקטנת של עיצוב ה-ArmaLite AR-10 של יוג'ין סטונר והציג אש סלקטיבית. ArmaLite מכרה את הפטנט והסימנים המסחריים לחברת הייצור של Colt בשנת 1959, וכתוצאה מכך ה-Colt AR-15, שהסיר את תכונת האש הסלקטיבית. לאחר שרוב הפטנטים של ה-Colt AR-15 פגו ב-1977, יצרני כלי ירייה רבים החלו לייצר עותקים של ה-Colt AR-15 בשמות שונים. בזמן שהפטנטים פגו, קולט שמר על הסימן המסחרי של השם AR-15 והוא היצרן היחיד שיכול לתייג את כלי הנשק שלהם כ-AR-15.[1]
האיסור על נשק תקיפה הפדרלי הגביל את מכירת ה-Colt AR-15 וכמה נגזרות בארצות הברית מ-1994 עד 2004, למרות שזה לא השפיע על רובים עם פחות תכונות ברשימה.[2][3] לאחר שהמונח רובי ספורט מודרניים נטבע בשנת 2009 על ידי הקרן הלאומית לירי ספורט בארצות הברית, איגוד סחר בנשק חם, הוא אומץ במהירות על ידי חלק גדול מהתעשייה.[4][5]
בזמן שנת 2010, רובים בסגנון AR-15 הפכו לאחד מ"הרובים האהובים והמושמצים ביותר" בארצות הברית, לפי הניו יורק טיימס. הרובים זכו לשמצה בין השאר בשל השימוש בהם בירי המוני בפרופיל גבוה.[6] הפופולריות של רובים בסגנון AR-15, שקודמה כ"הרובה של אמריקה" על ידי איגוד הרובים הלאומי, מיוחסת חלקית להגבלות פעילות, או להצעות לאסור או להגביל אותן.[7][8][9][10]
