העיר רומא הוקמה באמצע המאה ה-8 לפני הספירה על ידי שבט הלטינים. בני שבט זה התיישבו באזור הפורה ליד נהר הטיבּר בתחילת האלף הראשון לפני הספירה. פרנסתם העיקרית הייתה חקלאות. התושבים נקראו רומאים על שם עירם, ושפתם הייתה לטינית – על שם השבט.
