מינים אלה כשמם בעלי זנב מוארך וגוף קטן, אוזניהם קטנות ואפם המוארך בעל שפמות העוזרים בחישה. ראייתם חלשה אך שמיעתם טובה ולחלקם ישנה אפילו אקולוקציה חלשה, בדומה לעטלפים.
החדפים הם יצורים טורפים בעלי תיאבון חד. הם ניזונים בעיקר מחרקים אך לא יהססו לגוון גם ברכיכות, עכבישים, ביצים וחולייתנים קטנים יותר.
