Vigo Street, orixinalmente Vigo Lane,[1] é unha rúa curta situada no centro de Londres, que leva o seu nome da vitoria naval anglo-holandesa sobre os franceses e españois na batalla de Rande de 1702.[2][3] Discorre entre Regent Street e o cruzamento de Burlington Gardens e Savile Row.

Nun comezo, todo o camiño dende o que agora é Bond Street ata a actual Glasshouse Street, incluída Vigo Street, chamábase Glasshouse Street.[4] Despois da vitoria naval anglo-holandesa sobre os franceses e españois na batalla da Ría de Vigo en 1702, parte de Glasshouse Street pasou a chamarse Vigo Lane e logo en Vigo Street, aínda o primeiro foi usado en Elmes's London Streets ata 1831.[1]

Finalmente, a parte de Vigo Street detrás de Burlington House pasou a chamarse Burlington Gardens en 1831.[1][4]

Os editores John Lane e Elkin Mathews asociaronse en Vigo Street. Xuntos publicaron a revista literaria The Yellow Book volumes un e dous en 1894. Máis tarde fundaron The Bodley Head e continuaron publicando a obra ata que cesou en 1897.

Cando a asociación entre Lane e Mathews terminou, ambos continuaron tendo locais en Vigo Street e Mathews publicou as primeiras edicións de varias obras literarias importantes, incluíndo The Wind Among the Reeds de William Butler Yeats en 1899, Chamber Music de James Joyce en 1907. Tamén publicou obras de Lionel Johnson, John Masefield, J. M. Synge e Ezra Pound.[5]

Foi dende o número 8 da rúa que Allen Lane fundou Penguin Books como parte de Bodley Head en 1935. En 1985, a editorial colocou unha placa no número 8 para conmemorar o cincuentenario do libro de bolsillo Penguin.[6]

A rúa tamén é mencionada nos libros The Lost World, de Conan Doyle,[7] e The End of the Affair, de Graham Greene.
