Sequoyah (ᏍᏏᏉᏯ Ssiquoya, como asinaba o seu nome,[1][2] ou ᏎᏉᏯ Se-quo-ya, como é escrito na lingua cherokee na actualidade) (c. 1770–1840), foi un ourive, ferreiro, mestre e soldado nativo americano coñecido co nome inglés de George Gist ou George Guess. En 1821, creou o silabario cherokee, facendo posible ler e escribir en lingua cherokee. É particularmente célebre por ser a única persoa pre-literaria da historia coñecida en crear de forma independente un sistema de escrita efectiva.[3][4] Despois de coñecer a súa obra, o pobo da nación cherokee adoptou axiña o seu uso e fíxoo oficialmente en 1825.
