A parodia existe en tódolos medios, incluíndo literatura, música e cine. Os movementos culturais poden ser así mesmo parodiados.

Orixe occidental

Na antiga literatura grega, unha parodia era un tipo de poema que imitaba o estilo doutro poema. As raíces gregas da palabra parodia lévannos ao significado de "Poema irrespectuoso".

Os autores romanos definiron a parodia como a imitación dun poeta por outro con cariz humorístico. Do mesmo xeito, na literatura francesa neoclásica, unha parodia era un tipo de poema onde o estilo dunha obra é imitado por outra con fins humorísticos.
