O kirundi está clasificado como "en estado seguro" polo Libro Vermello das Linguas Ameazadas da UNESCO[1]

A lingua kirundi ou rundi é unha lingua bantú falada por case 9 millóns de persoas en Burundi e en partes adxacentes de Tanzania e a República Democrática do Congo, así como en Uganda. É a lingua oficial de Burundi. Kirundi é mutuamente intelixible co ruanda, unha lingua oficial de Ruanda, e os dous forman un continuo dialectal coñecido como rwanda-rundi.[2]

Os habitantes de Ruanda e Burundi pertencen a diferentes grupos étnicos: os hutus inclúen ós bakiga e outras etnias relacionadas (84%), os tutsis (15%), e os twa (1%) (un pobo pigmeo). A lingua é propia e nativa dos hutu, malia que os outros grupos étnicos presentes no país, como os tutsi, twa e hema adoptaron o kirundi.
