O ópata está clasificado como morta polo Libro Vermello das Linguas Ameazadas da UNESCO[1]

O ópata é unha lingua morta, ou ben dúas linguas estreitamente relacionadas, da familia uto-azteca, outrora falada polo pobo ópata no norte de Sonora, en México e no sueste de Arizona, nos Estados Unidos. Crese que xa estaba morta en 1930, e Carl Sofus Lumholtz informou que os ópata se "mexicanizaron" e perderon a súa lingua e costumes cando viaxaban por Sonora na década de 1890.

O ópata tamén recibe os nomes de tegüima, teguima, tehuima, tehui, eudeve, eudeva, heve, dohema, jova, joval, tonichi, sonori e ure.

Clasificación

O ópata foi considerado durante moito tempo como parte das linguas taracahítas, mais esta xa non se considera unha unidade xenética válida.[2][3][4][5]
