O esquí de fondo é un deporte que forma parte do programa olímpico oficial dende os primeiros Xogos Olímpicos de Inverno, celebrados en 1924, celebrados en Chamonix, Francia. As primeiras probas femininas foron introducidas nos Xogos Olímpicos de Inverno de 1952 realizados en Oslo (Noruega).
Os grandes dominadores deste deporte son Noruega, Suecia, Finlandia e a desaparecida Unión Soviética.
