Un diminutivo é unha variación dunha palabra mediante mecanismos morfolóxicos para atribuirlle semanticamente menores proporcións ("libriño") ou certo valor afectivo (Miña "casiña", meu lar).

No galego, os diminutivos adóitanse formar engadindo ao final da palabra o sufixo -iño (para o masculino) ou -iña (para o feminino), en concreto tras vogal. Existe un alomorfo -ciño, - ciña que se usa en verbas rematadas en ditongo ("paiciño") e consoante ("canciño"). Está por demostrar que exista unha certa distribución xeográfica no uso de -ciño tras vogal.

Outro morfema con certo rendemento histórico é -elo, presente tanto en antropónimos (apelidos) coma en topónimos (Covelo)

Hai veces en que a forma aparenta un diminutivo doutras linguas pero a palabra ten esa forma en galego: son os casos de sarillo ou do cultismo fibrilla/fibrila.

O seu morfema oposto correspondería ó aumentativo.
