Ideouse en Italia no século XV, aínda que o seu maior auxe data do século XVIII. O clavicordio é máis expresivo e delicado que o propio clavicémbalo, e caracterízase polas cordas tocadas en distintos puntos por unha cuña tanxente metálica, tamén ten a posibilidade de facer vibra-lo son a través da presión dos dedos no teclado, sendo esta a gran diferenza co clave. O seu son é doce, poético e melancólico. Carl Philip Enmanuel Bach fillo de Johann Sebastian Bach foi un gran compositor para este instrumento.
