  • O astrónomo danés Olaus Roemer mide a velocidade da luz pola posición dos satélites de Xúpiter. O seu resultado 225 000 km/s considérase satisfactorio para ser a primeira vez que se lograba e polo abraiante da velocidade, inimaxinábel na época, aínda que non se achegase á realidade.
  • O holandés Anton van Leeuwenhoek descobre as bacterias.
