Rinne an ceimiceoir Francach Louis Joseph Gay-Lussac taighde ar an ngaol idir toirteanna na n-imoibriúchán gásach agus toirteanna na ngás ba thoradh orthu faoi na coinníollacha céanna brú agus teochta. Thug toradh a chuid taighde ar Louis Joseph an 'Dlí um Thoirteanna Cuingreacha' a thionscnamh.

2 thoirt hidrigine agus 1 toirt ocsaigine = 1 toirt gaile

a bheith scríofa mar

2 mhóilíní Hidrigine + 1 móilín ocsaigine = 1 móilín uisce.

Foilsíodh Dlí Gay-Lussac sa bhliain 1808. Níor ghlacadh go forleathan ar dtús le Hipitéis Avogadro, áfach, go dtí go raibh an ceimiceoir Iodálach Stanislao Cannizzaro ábalta bailíocht na hipitéise a chur ina luí ar dhomhan na heolaíochta ag an Chéad Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta Cheimiceach sa bhliain 1860.
