Les crabes violonistes (Uca) sont un genre de crabes de la famille des Ocypodidae. Il regroupe une centaine d'espèces de crustacés décapodes[1],[2]. En français, Crabe violoniste est plus spécifiquement le nom de l’espèce Uca pugilator[3],[4],[5]. Celle-ci est aussi appelée cémafaute aux Antilles[réf. souhaitée].

Les mâles du genre Uca ont la particularité d’avoir une pince beaucoup plus grande que l'autre.

Dans la mangrove, de même que les racines de la plante Avicennia marina ces crabes réoxygènent le sédiment vaseux et modifient le cycle du soufre en contribuant à la biogéochimie des sulfures[6]

Description

La carapace est rhomboïdale tirant vers le carré[7].

Les pédoncules oculaires atteignent les angles externes antérieurs de la carapace. Le pédoncule ne s'étend pas au-delà des yeux[7].

Les pattes antérieures (pinces) sont très inégales[7].

Genre similaire

Le genre Uca est assez similaire au genre Ocypode mais s'en distingue par le pédoncule qui ne s'étend pas au-delà des yeux[7].
