Quarantaine-le-roi

La quarantaine-le-roi est un délai de quarante jours institué par Philippe Auguste permettant d'éviter des guerres privées, en instituant un temps de réflexion obligatoire. On demandait et exigeait de deux clans d’attendre pendant 40 jours avant de régler un conflit. L’idée est de laisser passer un certain temps pour que les tensions s’apaisent et de parvenir à régler le conflit par les voies judiciaires. Celui qui rompait la quarantaine était réputé avoir porté atteinte au roi.

Cette ordonnance fut renouvelée par Louis IX en 1245.
