En 1886, à Chicago, 340 000 travailleurs sont en grève pour la journée de huit heures. Une manifestation est organisée pour appuyer la revendication. Au moment où la foule se disperse, 200 policiers font irruption et chargent les ouvriers. Il y a un mort et une dizaine de blessés. Un nouveau rassemblement est convoqué pour le 4 mai, qui provoquera le Massacre de Haymarket Square.
En 1891, fusillade de Fourmies. La troupe tire sur des grévistes (9 morts et 35 blessés).
