Joseph Walterin maalaus, joka kuvaa Great Westernin lähtöä neitsytmatkalleen Bristolista vuonna 1838.

S/S Great Western avasi säännöllisen höyrylaivaliikenteen Atlantin poikki. Se saapui Bristolista New Yorkiin 23. huhtikuuta vuonna 1838. Atlantin ylitys vei kaksi viikkoa, mikä oli puolet purjealusten käyttämästä ajasta. Aluksen uppouma oli 1440 tonnia.[1]
