Michael Shermer

Michael Brant Shermer (s. 8. syyskuuta 1954) on yhdysvaltalainen skeptikko. Hän on perustanut The Skeptics Societyn ja toimii sen Skeptic-lehden päätoimittajana. Shermer kirjoittaa kolumneja Scientific American -lehteen. Hän on julkaissut useita kirjoja.
Ura
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Shermer valmistui humanististen tieteiden kandidaatiksi psykologiasta/biologiasta Pepperdinen yliopistosta 1976 ja humanististen tieteiden maisteriksi kokeellisesta psykologiasta Kalifornian osavaltionyliopistosta Fullertonista 1978. Filosofian tohtorin arvon hän sai vuonna 1991 tieteenhistoriasta Claremontin Graduate-yliopistosta.
Shermer on tieteenhistorian tohtori[1], sittemmin dosentti[2][3] ja lopulta Chapman Universityn "Presidential Fellow".[4]
Shermer on työskennellyt Occidental Collegessa, Kalifornian osavaltionyliopistossa Los Angelesissa ja Glendale Collegessa. Nykyisin hän on taloustieteen dosenttina Claremontin Graduate-yliopistossa.
Kannanottoja
[muokkaa | muokkaa wikitekstiä]Shermer kutsuu itseään ”ei-teistiksi” (engl. nontheist), koska hänen mukaansa sana ateisti on saanut kielteisen sävyn.[5] Hän käyttänyt termiä libertaristi[6] mutta sittemmin pitänyt sitä harhaanjohtavana. Hän esimerkiksi kannattaa tiettyjä aserajoituksia,[7] ja vastusti George W. Bushia molemmissa vaaleissa.[8] Kesäkuussa 2006 Shermer kirjoitti Scientific American -lehdessä, että todisteiden valossa ilmastonmuutosta ei voi enää kieltää.[9]
Shermer vastustaa kuolemanrangaistusta ja pitää sitä barbaarisena ja tehottomana keinona ehkäistä rikoksia.[7]
