Sumbumine on mõju võnkesüsteemis või väline mõju võnkesüsteemile, mis vähendab või takistab selle võnkumist. Füüsikalistes süsteemides on summutava mõjuga protsessid, mis hajutavad võnkumisel salvestatud energiat.[1] Sumbumist tekitava mõju näiteks on viskoosne takistus (vedeliku viskoossus töötab võnkumisele vastu, põhjustades selle aeglustumist; vt viskoosne summutamine) mehaanilistes süsteemides, elektriline takistus elektroonilistes ostsillaatorites ning valguse neeldumine ja hajumine optilistes ostsillaatorites. Sumbumine, mis ei teki energia kadude tõttu, võib olla oluline muudes võnkuvates süsteemides, nagu need, mis esinevad bioloogilistes süsteemides.
