Keemilise reaktsiooni kiirust limiteeriv staadium on astmelise reaktsiooni kõige aeglasem staadium, s. t. kõige aeglasem elementaarreaktsioon teel lähteühenditest produktideni.

Enamasti on astmelistes reaktsioonides suure reaktsioonivõimega intermediaadi (näiteks karbokatioonid, karbanioonid, vabad radikaalid jm) moodustumine kiirust limiteerivaks staadiumiks. Suure reaktsioonivõimega intermediaadi teke on palju aeglasem kui selle edasine reaktsioon järgmises staadiumis, ja nii saab rakendada statsionaarse oleku lähendust kineetiliste võrrandite lihtsustamiseks.

Reaktsiooni kiirus sõltub ainete kontsentratsioonist. Nii võib osutuda kiirust limiteerivaks (ühe) aine juurdevool, nimetatakse seda difusioonlimiteeritud reaktsiooniks (näiteks põlemine või katalüüs).
