En los siglos siguientes eventos similares fueron organizados en Francia y en Grecia, pero eran de dimensiones reducidas y no internacionales. La reactivación del interés en los Juegos Olímpicos aumentó cuando las ruinas de la Antigua Olimpia fueron descubiertas por arqueólogos en la mitad del siglo XIX.
