La prostitución es una componente de la vida cotidiana de los griegos antiguos desde la época Arcaica. En las ciudades griegas más importantes y en particular los puertos, emplea a una parte no despreciable de la población y representa una actividad económica de primer plano. Está lejos de ser clandestina: las ciudades no la reprueban y los prostíbulos existen a pleno día. En la Atenas antigua, se atribuye incluso al legendario legislador Solón la creación de burdeles estatales a precios moderados. La prostitución concierne innegablemente a los dos sexos: mujeres de todas las edades y hombres jóvenes se prostituyen, para una clientela mayoritariamente masculina.
