Alexander William Williamson (1824-1904) estis skota kemiisto kaj docento, konata dank'al la etera sintezo de Williamson[1]. Li estis profesoro de kemio en la Universitata Kolegio de Londono, kie li laboris ekde 1855 ĝis sia emeretiĝo en 1887. Kiam li provis konfirmi eksperimenton de Charles Gerhardt por sintezi la butilakoholon, li reakciis la kalian etanolaton (kiu estas la kalia salo de la etanolo) kun etila jodido, kaj sukcesis la duetilan eteron (kaj ne la normalan butanolon).
