User talk:Alafo

Hi Alafo, welcome to Wikipedia! you changed 'hyena' to 'lion' in the Nafaanra sample sentences. Do you speak Nafaanra? If so, please give us more! If not, would you mind telling why lion would be better here? According to Dean Jordan's (1978) paper 'Nafaara tense-aspect in the folk tale', it should be hyena. You can answer at my talk page or at Talk:Nafaanra language if you want. — mark 08:58, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Alafo, I have responded on my talk page. In the meantime, here are some links you might find useful by way of an introduction to Wikipedia:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); it produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or just ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! — mark 12:06, 13 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Recording Nafaanra?

[edit]

Hi Alafo, I have once again responded on my talk page. In the meantime, I have another question for you.

You're probably aware that Nafaanra language is a featured article here on the English Wikipedia. In the discussion leading to the article becoming featured (which can be found here), some people mentioned that it would be really nice to have some sound examples of the language. Now, the obvious question: it would be really nice if you and your wife would be able to record some example sentences and subsequently upload them to Wikipedia. You certainly shouldn't feel obligated; I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. Just know that if you two feel like it, it would be a really great addition to the article (both the English and the French one).

I can't help but wondering what languages you yourself speak. I gather from your activities on the French wikipedia that you're a Francophone, but then, Alafo is not a typical French name (it sounds Ghanaian, actually). To introduce myself: I'm a Dutchman studying African languages and linguistics. Since I discovered Nafaanra last year I have sort of a weak spot for it — it's an intriguing language. I do know a thing or two about other languages, too. — mark 17:33, 16 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mark,I have responded on your talk page. Alafo 07:29, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Alafo, I can't wait to hear the Nafaanra examples, but unfortunately my internet connection is broken since last week. This will be fixed very soon, I hope, but until that time I can't listen to the examples in the University Library where I'm working from now. Cheers, — mark 08:09, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh joy! My internet connection is working again and I can't tell you how excited I am about the recordings. It is great! Your wife's pronunciation sounds very natural and the examples really are an asset to the article. Millions of thanks to the two of you for taking the time to do this — ni e ŋga mboo na yiɛshɔɔrɔ ni! (is that correct Nafaanra?). It's awesome. As you have seen, I have added the examples to the English article as well. Kind regards, — mark 11:05, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your ' thanks to you with joy' is correct except that my wife add a 'i' to make ' yiɛshiɔɔrɔ' . We 'll complete the others exemples, please go to your talk page to read my suggestions. Alafo 16:36, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Phonology

[edit]

Dear Alafo, I have tried to contact you via your user page on the French Wikipedia, only to learn that you seem to have left there. I hope you'll get my message about the phonology of Nafaanra! Kind regards, — mark 16:10, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
