Percy Metcalf(e) was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in England ^[1] He was born on the 14th of January 1985 ^[2]and died on the 9th of October 1970 in Fulham, London. ^[3]The name Metcalf comes from the Middle English metecalf meaning ‘food calf’. This means the name probably belongs to the occupational name for a herdsman or slaughterer.^[4] Percy was neither of these though. He decided to go into the occupation of becoming an artist, he did this by joining the Leeds School of Art in the year 1910 as a general artist.^[5] From here he decided to continue a career in art as it was something he found himself being good at. He moved to sculpting and designing objects as an art form at the Royal College of Art in London.^[6] Here he was influenced by Francis Derwent Wood who he worked with and was mentored by.

Barnyard Set	Irish Free State	Percy Metcalfe is most commonly known for designing the first set of Irish Free State coinage that got released in 1926. He won a competition over a few other artists. Egypt Coinage	Egypt	Percy Metcalfe was assigned the task by the Royal Mint to design a coin for the King Farouk. This coin saw the light of day in 1937. This coin is the King Farouk Coin, his initials 'PM' can be seen in the bottom middle of the coin. [8]
Iraq King Coin Set	Iraq	Metcalfe also created coin effigies of two kings of Iraq. His portrait of King Faisal I first appeared on the coins of Iraq in 1931, whilst his portrait of King Ghazi was first seen on coins in 1936. This is coin of King Faisal. [9]
