In writing, although it would be nice to have a gender-neutral 3s pronoun. Prescriptivism is sometimes fun, even though it really isn't something linguistics does.
| ||
To use 'they' to stay gender-neutral in writing is...less than appealing, and using "he or she" multiple times consecutively looks clumsy. And "aren't I" instead of "ain't I?" to avoid all use (even etymologically correct use) of "ain't" is something with which I ain't putting up. :)
Generally no infinitives split with a negative, unless there is a specific reason against keeping the infinitive together. When there is a significant difference between 'not to believe' and 'to not believe', then I let it pass.
I think 'put up' should be regarded as a single noun if the infinitive is to be viewed as generally one unit.
