Non-English titles

[edit]

Pinging creator/principle editor @Bearcat: any reason why WP:USEENGLISH wouldn't apply here, ie., piping Jésus de Montréal for Jesus of Montreal or Rebelle for War Witch? Not that it's a big deal, I was wondering if there's any particular reason. Ribbet32 (talk) 21:45, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • UE only determines what the title of the page should be; it is not controlling on how the film should or should not be referred to in the body text of other articles or templates that are crosslinking to it. The Academy uses the original French titles, not the English ones, in its nominations database and on the air at the ceremony, and the media virtually all use the original French titles, not the English ones, in their reportage of the awards, meaning that the French title is the one that will actually be seen in nearly all of the possible references — so CSA-related content on Wikipedia can never entirely elide the original French title of a nominated or winning film.
The actual rule in this context is that while the film's page should be located at the film's English title rather than its French title if it has one, the links to it from articles such as Canadian Screen Award for Best Motion Picture and 5th Canadian Screen Awards (and their equivalents for other awards and other years) have to be formatted in one of three ways: it can be (a) English Title (French Title), (b) French Title (English Title), or (c) French Title Only in certain situations, but can never be just English Title Only with no mention of the French title.
If you feel strongly that the template should be revised to go "English Title (French Title)" for Quebec films — and, even more importantly, if you can figure out a way to do that without turning the template into an unreadable mess that's longer and more user-unfriendly than it needs to be — then that's an alternative option, but the French title cannot simply be elided entirely: in a CSA-related context, it's either "both titles" or "original French title only", and can never be just "translated English title only". UE doesn't require that; it just dictates the page title of our article about the film, and is in no way a ban on including the original French title in the body of it or other related articles.
