Addition of Online Abuse to the page

[edit]

In an increasingly technological world, the internet has created a new venue for the abuse of children in various forms. I believe that online abuse against children should be considered a subsection of child abuse, thus I propose an addition to the child abuse wikipedia page found here. Online abuse of children takes various forms, from cyberbullying to sexual abuse via webcams and pornography etc. I would like to add the subsection of online abuse as follows.

1. Online abuse as type 2.5 under the subsection “types” a. Cyberbullying as the first topic, seeing as it is the most common form of online abuse and most widely known

                                                       i.	Forms it takes

1. Social media, texting etc. 2. catfishing

                                                      ii. Statistics
                                                     iii. Impact
                                                    iv. Laws surrounding the matter

b. Sexual abuse as a second topic

                                                       i.	Forms

1. Pornography 2. unsolicited sexual images 3. webcam abuse

                                                      ii. statistics
                                                     iii. impact
                                                    iv. laws

c. Grooming as the third topic

                                                       i.	Forms

1. Chatrooms 2. Social networks

                                                      ii. Statistics
                                                     iii. Impact
                                                    iv. Laws

In a long list of symptoms, almost all with internal links, PTSD has no link which makes it look lesser than other symptoms.

I see that PTSD is described in its full name elsewhere in the article, and linked to an internal page. It seems to only have the one link in the entire article.

However, some other symptoms, eg depression, are linked multiple times.

I know from my decade of work with survivors of Child Sexaul Abuse that PTSD is a significant area of problem. Notably, because most of PTSD symptoms are invisible, there is a risk that they are undiagnosed, untreated, unacknowledged. This makes it an almost certain source of self-criticism, doubt and guilt all of which I believe contribute to depression and other symptoms.

I think it would be proportional to provide the same link as used elsewhere in the article. DS0022 (talk) 16:46, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DS0022 I think it is well-appropriate to include PTSD as it is one of the most well-known symptoms. What do you mean by "link"? Do you mean inclusion in the article, or do you mean a link that you click on? —Panamitsu (talk) 21:48, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I am a newbie, unsure of terminology here.
I meant linking to the internal Wikipedia page on PTSD for several or all mentions of PTSD, which parallels the situation for depression, etc.
(Having worked in the field, I feel strongly that the effects of PTSD are under-recognised and I want people to learn about it and take it seriously. So for readers who scan the article for their particular focus rather than reading through, it's important to have these links highly acessible.) DS0022 (talk) 10:09, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@DS0022 Oh I think I understand. The reason that there isn't a link to PTSD on every mention of it is the manual of style. It says that articles should be linked to once or twice because it can be difficult to read when there are links everywhere. See MOS:LINKONCE which explains this. —Panamitsu (talk) 10:17, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll withdraw my suggestion. Cheers. DS0022 (talk) 11:41, 2 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
