Lasso is the upcoming tenth studio album by American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey. It is scheduled to be released through Interscope Records and Polydor Records. The album is set to mark the first country project by the singer.[4][5]
Background
[edit]Based on her previous works, Lana Del Rey has been labeled an "alt-pop"[6] or alternative pop artist by critics.[7] She believed that after her 2019 album Norman Fucking Rockwell!, things took a "huge turn"; she feared that she would be "scared into making safe choices" and decided to take "cool-off"s after releases to "reevaluate things".[3] In November 2020, Del Rey considered releasing "a digital record of American standards and classics for Christmas" but ended up not doing so.[4]
The following year, Del Rey announced that she had recorded an entire cover album of country songs, inspired by her singles "Ride" (2012) and "Video Games" (2011); she elaborated: "I went back and listened to 'Ride' and 'Video Games' and thought, you know they're kind of country. Maybe the way 'Video Games' got remastered, they're pop—but there's something Americana about it for sure."[4] On September 20, 2023, half a year from the release of her album Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, Del Rey revealed that she had been working on an album concept that was more "in an Americana vein".[3]
For the remainder of the year, Del Rey decided to test "the country waters" by performing a cover of "Stand by Your Man" in September, a rendition of "Unchained Melody" in November and releasing a cover version of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" in December.[8] During a speech at the NMPA Songwriter Awards on January 31, 2024, Del Rey paid tribute to long-time collaborator Jack Antonoff and announced that they would be "going country" for her next musical endeavor, spurred by numerous commercially successful mainstream releases in 2023.[1] The change of genres would mark a significant departure from predominantly alternative pop musical output.[9] The singer also announced the title to be Lasso and that it was slated for release in September 2024.[10] On August 21, 2024, Del Rey confirmed in an interview with Vogue magazine that she will be releasing "two more [singles] [...] by the end of the year".[2] She also stated that the sound of the album will not be a "heavy departure" from her previous albums, but would still be a "classic country, American, or Southern Gothic production".[2]
