Summary

Description Introduced, warm-season, annual or biennial, erect, hairy herb to 50 cm tall. Leaves are all lobed or dissected; the basal leaves being deeply dissected into narrow lobes. Flowerheads are dense racemes, which elongate at maturity. Flowers are small and inconspicuous, with 2 stamens and 4 tiny white petals that are shorter than the sepals. Fruit are siliculas; green and circular, with a shallow notch at the apex. Flowering is in summer and autumn. A native of South America, it is an uncommon weed of crops, roadsides, waste areas and overgrazed pastures. Its abundance in pastures can be an indicator of overgrazing or other disturbances that have created bare ground and/or reduced competition. Relatively palatable and of reasonable feed quality when young. It quickly loses quality at flowering and is known to taint milk and eggs. Control is rarely needed. The most effective management strategy to avoid large populations is a competitive perennial pasture and good grazing management. Herbicides are registered for its control.
