Summary

Description
English: Queen Suriyothai Monument was constructed in 1991 in the area called “Tung Makham Yong” in Ban Mai sub-district, PhraNakorn Si Ayutthaya district in order to honor Queen Suriyothai and to mark the great occasion of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s 60th birthday anniversary in 1992. The memorial site is believed to be the actual site where a Siamese queen was killed in a heroic battle. It is known for her ultimate sacrifice in an attempt to protect her husband’s life in a battle with Burmese army. While fighting, King MahaChakkrapat’s elephant stumbled, Queen Suriyothai charged ahead to put her elephant between the King and the Viceroy of Pray. The Viceroy then engaged the fight and cleaved her with his halberd from her shoulder to her breast, resulting in the death of the queen on her elephant’s back. The bronze-cast statue of Queen Suriyothai riding on an elephant is about one and a half of the actual size. The site also displays other 49 sculptures situated nearby the monument. The monument was completed on July 3rd, 1995. And Her Majesty Queen Sirikit had come to ritual the spirit of Queen Suriyothai.
