Français : Le petit temple 17, bâti en pierres. Probablement Ve siècle. Sanchi. Le temple le plus ancien construit qui nous soit parvenu est celui de Sanchi : le temple no 17 ; mais il s'agit probablement d'un temple bouddhique, comme l'ensemble du site3. Surélevé sur un soubassement, il est composé d'un sanctuaire (appareillé à joints vifs, initialement) et d'un porche à quatre colonnes à hautes bases carrées. Il aurait été construit au début du ve siècle de l'ère commune. Il est peu décoré : seuls des lions couchés gardent un arbre sacré, sur chaque face du soutien de l'entablement. « Il est possible que le toit plat ait supporté une haute toiture aux arènes curvilignes, comme il en fut généralement aux époques suivantes. » Référence : Anne-Marie Loth, Art de l'Inde : diversité et spiritualité, Bruxelles ; Paris, Chapitre Douze, 2006, 443 p.
